Do you think social media is disconnecting people instead of connecting them?

For sure! You can't even go out with your friends anymore without them constantly checking their cell phones to check their Facebook/Twitter/Instagram/Snapchat/other notifications.
It definitely is, because now a days people are more concerned with interacting with their internet friends, than their actual real life friends. They would rather be on their cell phone the whole time during a social gathering than actually, you know, so
No, I don't think so. (Really? :? Why?)
Cellphones have become more of a distraction and less of a device used to make phone calls and send text messages.
Sometimes I just want to yell out, "GET THE FUCK OFF YOUR GODDAMN CELL PHONE AND SOCIALIZE!!!!! :frustrated::angered::X

From what I understand, people generally use social media to get the news, play games, and - ultimately - to connect with people. While I do believe/agree that it is unhealthy for someone to become addicted to their phone to the point where they're constantly on it, but people can still be connected through social media. When scrolling through Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, etc., you can see what someone is up to and talking about. From here, you then can chat with them about it, and voila! A connection is made. I've developed a lot of connections this way, myself. Anyway, while I do understand that people should try to connect more with their IRL friends when meeting them IRL and keep off the devices, I wouldn't go so far as to say that their device usage and time spent on social media disconnects them from other people.

Also, for cases where one is forced to go to an outing, otherwise has no interest in meeting up while still having to go, or has social anxieties, social media and the devices used to browse these can be a useful crutch. This can help someone relax more and enjoy themselves, even if they're not being social to anyone in the outing. I'd say this is better than having them be stuck without any sort of device and being miserable.
